I had the opportunity to photograph this lovely family back in the summer. The weather was perfect, the lighting was great and I got to photograph at my favorite park – Barnet Marine Park!

When I schedule a maternity session with a client, the first thing I like to get to know is what style they like to go with for their session.  Generally, my maternity sessions are posed, casual or a little bit of both. With posed sessions, I usually bring a lot of my maternity dresses along and we either do the session inside my studio or outside. Recently, I have had a lot of bookings where clients like to do both inside and outside shots. The expecting Mama can have the session on her own or bring family members along. Usually the mama gets glammed up and we play dress up.  Then there is more casual maternity sessions. These sessions usually involve the family and I take less posed shots. I focus on the candid moments between the family, especially if they have small children.

The session I photographed below is causal. The clothing worn in the photographs are the client’s which really worked with the season. One thing I liked about this session was I got to bring some props along for the little girl in the photographs: the bike and log bench. I think adding a few props to a session really creates variety in the photographs. The bike in the photograph is actually my Dad’s when he was little. I love using it because it is one of a kind and keeps the kids distracted so I can get some great photos.
