At the end of November, I braved the cold and photographed a stylized bridal session in Banff, Alberta.
I have always wanted to photograph a bridal session in the snow, but being from Vancouver, there isn’t a lot of snow out this way. Our winters are warm and rainy, unlike the rest of Canada. The odd time when it does snow, it turns into slush which is annoying to walk and drive in. The only time you will see ‘real’ snow is if you travel up to one of the local ski resorts.
When I was thinking of ‘snowy destinations’ for photos, I immediately thought of Banff. Banff is a small and beautiful community with breathtaking scenery. It was an area I had never explored and thought I’d dive right in to organizing a photo shoot there.
The one thing that I was not used to was the cold. Banff would reach -25 at night and -10 during the day. I was wearing many layers of clothing but never felt like I was warm. I think I would have to live in Banff for a while before getting used to the weather.
Due to a recent snowfall in Banff, a few elements of my shoot had to be improvised. I was actually supposed to photograph this session with another photographer but many streets and highways were closed due to the slick and white out conditions. I flew into Banff so I didn’t have any issues with travel.
I was so glad to have my model, Devan, with me because she knew all the amazing spots to photograph. We went all over Banff taking advantage of the scenery around the Fairmont Hotel, some local parks, trails and the river.
Thanks and enjoy the photos.
