Prepping for your Newborn Session

To ensure we have a smooth and successful session for your little one, I’ve put together a helpful prep list. Please take a moment to review the following:

1. Scheduling & Timing:

  • Best Time for Newborn Photos: Newborn photos are best taken within the first 5-14 days after birth, when your baby is still very sleepy and flexible.
  • Session Length: Plan for about 1-4 hours for the session (timing is dependent on session booked). I will take our time to soothe and comfort your baby, capture those precious moments, and allow for feedings or diaper changes as needed.
  • If there are any siblings attending the session, family photos will be done first then I recommend taking the child out for the remaining part of the session.

2. Clothing for Baby:

  • Diaper: Please arrive with a clean diaper on your baby. It’s also a good idea to bring extra diapers, wipes, and diaper cream just in case.
  • Outfits for Baby: I have a variety of wraps, blankets, and props for newborn sessions. However, feel free to bring any special outfits you’d like to use for the photos. Think about neutral colors, soft pastels, or simple patterns.
  • Accessories: If you have any sentimental items (like a favorite stuffed animal, blanket, or family heirloom), feel free to bring those to incorporate into the session.

3. Clothing for Parents & Siblings:

  • Parents’ Outfits: For family portraits, solid, neutral colors work best. Avoid clothing with large logos or busy patterns, as they can distract from the baby.
  • Sibling Outfits: If siblings are involved in the photos, similar advice applies. Simple, solid colors or soft patterns complement the newborn well.

4. Feeding & Comfort:

  • Feeding: Ensure your baby is well-fed before arriving. If you’re breastfeeding, feel free to do so during the session. If you’re bottle-feeding, please bring enough formula or breast milk for the session. We can take breaks as needed.
  • Comfort Items: If your baby has a favorite pacifier or item that helps soothe them, be sure to bring it along.

5. Temperature Control:

  • Warmth: Newborn sessions tend to be warmer than usual, as it helps keep the baby calm and sleepy. Please dress comfortably and wear layers so you can adjust as needed.
  • Room Temperature: We will keep the studio at a comfortable temperature for your baby.

6. Safety & Soothing:

  • Sleepy Baby: A well-rested baby will make the session go smoother. If possible, try to keep your baby awake for a little while before the session, so they’ll sleep during most of it.
  • Soothing: Babies often need to be soothed between setups (gentle rocking, feeding, or a soft shushing sound). I’m experienced at working with newborns and will take my time to ensure they’re comfortable.

7. What to Expect:

  • Props & Backdrops: I will provide all props, blankets, baskets, and backdrops for the session. I’ve curated these to be both safe and aesthetically pleasing.
  • Poses: The session can be more natural with relaxed poses or I can do more structured poses to capture the beauty of your baby. If you have any specific requests (for example, family shots or certain poses), feel free to share them with me.

8. Arrival Time & Parking:

  • Please Arrive Early: Arriving a bit early will help us stay on schedule and allow you to settle in. If you’re running late, kindly let me know.
  • Parking Information: There is a parking lot in the commercial complex my studio is located

9. After the Session:

  • Viewing: Within a week, I will send you a gallery link to view your photos. Once you’ve had time to select your favorites, I will edit the photos and send you the online gallery where you can download your images. We can discuss options for prints, albums, and digital files.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions before the session. I’m here to help!
