Getting Ready Prep List for Outdoor Family Photos

1. Outfits & Appearance

Coordinate, don’t match – Choose complementary colors and avoid loud patterns.
Check for wrinkles & stains – Lay outfits out the night before. Steam or iron and clothing like linen or silk material.
Comfortable shoes – Especially if walking on grass, sand, or uneven ground.
Hair & grooming – Hair neatly styled, facial hair groomed, nails clean.
Touch-up essentials – Lip balm, powder, and a brush for quick fixes.

2. Accessories & Props

Minimal jewelry – Keep it simple to avoid distractions.
Hats, scarves, or layers (if seasonal) for variety in shots.
Props (if desired) – A blanket, picnic basket, or meaningful items. The photographer can bring items upon request.

3. Kids & Pets

Snacks & water – Keep little ones happy and hydrated.
Favorite toy or treat – Helps with smiles & attention.
Wipes & tissues – Quick cleanup for messes.
Leash & cleanup bags (if bringing a pet).

4. Weather & Location Prep

Check the forecast – Plan for sun, wind, or cold. Rainy day sessions can be rescheduled.
Bug spray & sunscreen – If needed for the location.
Backup shoes/clothes – If it’s muddy or wet. Kids tend to get dirty fast, so bring a back up pair of clothing, just in case.
Arrive early – Give yourself buffer time to get settled. Young kids tend to fall asleep in cars. Also good to arrive 15-20 mins early so they have time to wake up.

The session below were photos taken at one of my favorite location in Maple Ridge. If you are looking for a certain vibe/backdrop for you photos, let me know and I can give you a list of locations.
