Many people have asked what the difference between a lifestyle and posed newborn photography is. Hopefully this description and photos below clarify the difference.
Posed Studio Newborn Sessions:
Posed newborn sessions occur at my studio. My studio is small but does the trick. You don’t need a lot of room when you are photographing newborns.
Due to Vancouver’s dark and grey winters, I use artificial light. I use a large light source which resembles natural light.
Studio sessions can be for just the baby or immediate family can be included in the images. I have a few packages for studio newborn sessions so email if you would like to see my full price list.
In studio, I have lots of props for use. During the session I will use a beanbag with fabric over top as a backdrop. I have lots of colours and textures of fabric to choose from. On the beanbag I can place baby in outfits, headbands, bonnets, hats and wraps.
After the beanbag I will use baskets, buckets, mini beds, bowls and etc to put baby in. I have several faux wood mats and other backdrops that are used in this part of the session. Clothing items will also be added to baby.
For family and sibling photos, I have a few backdrop I use: brown, cream, white of black. The family pics should only take up to 30 minutes of the session as the newborn is the main focus.
On average, studio sessions last 2-3 hours in length so bring something to read and eat. These sessions are long because baby needs time to eat and be comforted in order to get sleepy for the poses. Baby can be awake but it is a lot easier when baby is sleeping. Usually newborns are sleepiest within the first two week of births so the session should be booked during this time.
Lifestyle Photo Sessions:
Lifestyle newborn photo sessions occur in the comfort of your own home. I do not bring any props for this style of session. It is photo journalistic is style and incorporates more photos with family.
Lifestyle sessions are captured with mostly natural light so the session needs to occur during the day when the sun is out. If you do not have lots of natural light in your house, I would not recommend this style of session for you.
It is recommended that before a lifestyle newborn session that all clutter be removed and anything you do not want in the photos be put away and out of site.
The lifestyle session can last anywhere from 1 hour to 2 hours depending on the session you book. It is not as integral for baby to be asleep compared to a posed newborn session. These sessions can occur anywhere within the first month of birth.
