Prepping for a cake Smash

FILED IN: Uncategorized

I have been photographing cake smash sessions for years. Most people don’t realize how much time is involved in planning, prepping, setting up and then finally cleaning up.

Prepping for a cake smash session (usually for a baby’s 1st birthday) needs more time than a normal portrait session because of the mess, timing with the baby, and props. Here’s a practical photographer prep checklist broken into stages.

1. Client Planning (Before the Session)

  • Confirm baby’s age and milestone (usually around 11–12 months).
  • Choose a theme or color palette with parents.
  • Discuss cake design (simple frosting works best).
  • Ask about allergies or dietary restrictions (eggs, dairy, nuts).
  • Plan session order (portraits → cake smash → bath splash).
  • Send parents a prep guide:
    • Bring wipes, towel, extra outfits.
    • Avoid feeding baby right before cake smash.
    • Schedule around nap time.

2. Set Design & Props

Prepare everything in advance so the baby doesn’t have to wait.

Backdrop

  • Seamless paper, fabric backdrop, or themed set
  • Floor layer (vinyl, mat, wood board, etc.)

Props

  • Cake stand
  • Themed decorations (balloons, banners, crates, letters)
  • Props in the backdrop (themed based)

Cleanup Prep

  • Waterproof mat or puppy pads under the setup
  • Towels and wipes nearby
  • Trash bag for messy props

3. The Cake

  • Order or confirm the cake size (4–6 inches).
  • Use soft frosting so it smashes easily.
  • Avoid fondant (too hard for babies).
  • Avoid ice cream cake as it is too cold and melts.
  • Minimal decorations to prevent choking hazards.
  • Bring extra frosting in case you need to touch up the look.

4. Camera & Lighting Setup

Camera gear

  • Camera body + backup
  • Portrait lens (35mm / 50mm / 85mm)
  • Memory cards formatted
  • Batteries charged

Lighting

  • Soft, even light (softboxes or natural light)
  • Avoid strong shadows
  • Test exposure before baby arrives

5. Studio Prep

  • Warm room temperature (babies get cold quickly).
  • Music or toys to keep baby happy.
  • Paper towels, wipes, sanitizing spray.
  • Towels ready to give to baby
  • Make sure wash tube sink is ready for clean up

6. Shooting Flow (Typical Session Structure)

  1. Clean portraits (baby in outfit, no cake yet).
  2. Family photos (optional).
  3. Cake smash portion.
  4. Bath splash cleanup photos (tub + bubbles).

7. During the Smash

  • Let the baby explore the cake naturally.
  • Encourage gently (don’t force).
  • Capture:
    • curiosity
    • first touch
    • smashing
    • eating
    • messy expressions

8. Post-Session Tasks

  • Clean set and sanitize props.
  • Backup photos immediately.
  • Cull images.
  • Edit highlights (color, skin tones, frosting cleanup).
  • Deliver gallery to client.

Booking a Newborn Session

I do cake smash sessions year round. whether it is last minutes or a few months in advance, I will be able to take you on for a session. If you have a specific theme in mind, it is better to plan a few weeks before the desired session date so I have time to plan the set and find props.

My studio is in Surrey, Clayton Heights. I have lots of options for portraits and family options as well if you would like to add that onto your session.
